Teaching Methods
I had the opportunity to observe how my cooperating teacher, Ms. Elma Jean Dahay, practiced her teaching at Laureta National Highschool. With her teaching, I learned many interesting things that I added to my list of experiences for my future career.
The first thing that made me feel like I needed to learn was how she utilized the school’s facilities. Laureta is not a perfect school, with shortcomings in equipment, tools and playing fields. But that’s not what she brings to the table, so it doesn’t make PE boring.
She practices student-centered teaching methods. The learning tasks she gives during her lessons serve as prompts, allowing students to extract information from the lesson autonomously and intelligently. And she also taught me how to manage a classroom effectively. With teenagers having a lot of energy and not easy to manage, she sets expectations before the start of class throughout the school year. Setting standards is extremely important so that students know what is expected of them by their teachers. Over time, students will gradually understand that each teacher has different expectations, thereby being able to behave appropriately towards teachers.
The Use of Technology
Ms. Jean's use of technology in teaching also made me feel excited about the lessons I had the opportunity to observe.
During the time in the classroom, she uses PowerPoint to deliver lesson information in a dynamic and visual manner. The presentation includes images, lesson videos, and interactive games embedded throughout for recap activities, which makes the learning experience much more engaging.
During practice time, because the gymnasium is a fairly large area with many different sounds from many directions, she uses speakers, microphones, and even mobile microphones to be able to convey information to the students below. Combined with her instructions are warm-up videos with vibrant music, capable of making students excited for that day's practice session.
Comparing two countries inevitably reveals differences in their education systems. I've learned a great deal from this experience, and these are my observations on the teaching scenario.
