History

The University of Mindanao was founded in 1946 by Atty. Guillermo E. Torres, Sr., originally named Mindanao Colleges, with the mission of providing accessible higher education to the people of Mindanao in the post-World War II era. Initially offering courses in arts and commerce, it quickly grew to meet the educational needs of the region. In 1966, the institution gained university status and was renamed the University of Mindanao.

Throughout the 1950s to 1970s, UM expanded its academic offerings to include programs in law, engineering, education, and public administration, making it a pioneering institution in Mindanao. It was the first to offer graduate programs in business and public administration, cementing its reputation as a leading business school in the region.

Today, UM is one of the largest universities in Mindanao, with multiple campuses, accredited programs, and a strong emphasis on research and community service. It continues to play a significant role in providing quality education and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
